Do you know the different between “Modern Art” and “modern art”? (Those capital letters actually mean something!) Did the artists of the early 20th century just burst onto the scene with a host of wholly new ideas—or was there an evolution that led to the new trends? What was going on in the culture during each of the major modern movements that contributed to their development? In this presentation program, we’ll examine the art produced from around 1874 to 1945 (or so) to find out where the seeds of modernism were sown and why they developed as they did. This survey will also reveal relationships between the past and present that one typically doesn’t expect in an analysis of Modern Art. Each week we’ll focus on a different movement.
Each week’s presentation will be stand-alone—so you may attend one, more, or ALL of these sessions. (We recommend the latter.)
