Jill Kiefer, Wet and Wild, 2011; alternative media on masonite, 24 x 12 in., Collection of the artistI teach a class at the Palos Verdes Art Center called Anything Goes, which focuses on creating abstract works of art using primarily non-artist materials. These include metallic paints and patinas, crackling gels and pastes, texturing agents, carpentry tapes and supplies, tissue and other papers, and a whole other host of industrial materials. This workshop is totally liberating! Students develop a variety of techniques and approaches. Along with fundamental and advanced painting concepts and techniques, students learn important lessons about the relationships between subject matter and materials AND about letting the work process direct the final product. No prior art training is required for these workshops, and students can create a work as large as 60”x60” or work on several smaller projects. I offer this workshop every term at PVAC.
