Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is considered among the greatest of the Post-Impressionist and Dutch painters. Although his career spanned a period of only ten years, he powerfully influenced the current of Expressionism in modern art.
Vincent’s striking color, coarse brushwork, and contoured forms speak to us in unique and enduring ways. Some of his paintings are eerily haunting—and others are simply delightful.
The Van Gogh mythology does tend to muddy the facts of Vincent’s life with plenty of fiction. But ongoing scholarship helps us to make important distinctions between Vincent’s life and his legend. We’ll be looking at a number of his works in this program, and special attention will be paid to the Irises and Roses soon to be on exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (opening May 12, 2015). Join us as we explore the latest theories about Vincent’s mental health—or lack of it. Find out how contemporary scholars feel about the possibility that he may not have committed suicide. Discover what can be gleaned from Vincent’s own words—in the wealth of correspondence the artist left behind. This will be an enlightening program on one of history’s most beloved artists.
