  • Exit Through the Gift Shop
    Exit Through the Gift Shop
When British stencil artist Banksy traveled to Los Angeles to work, he came across obscure French filmmaker Thierry Guetta and his badly organized collection of videotapes involving the activities of graffiti artists. Inspired, Banksy assembled them with new footage to create this talked-about documentary, and the result is a mind-boggling and odd film (so strange as to be thought a hoax by some) about outsider artists and the definition of art itself.

Gaetano Prevati’s Divisionism

Gaetano Previati - Children with Fruit Baskets (Fanciulli con cesti di frutta), 1916 - Oil on canvas, 100 x 81 cm - Private collection. Loan to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, VeniceItalian painter and writer Gaetano Previati (1852-1920) was one of the leading exponents of Divisionism (the separation of color into dots or patches applied directly to the canvas).  He was particularly skilled at large-scale decorative schemes, and especially noted for his writings on technique and theory.

Previati studied at the School of Art in Ferrara, in Florence, and in 1877 at the Brera Academy in Milan. In 1878, he turned to Impressionism—starting with historical subjects. But after studying the work of the Pre-Raphaelites, his work became spiritual. During the late 1880s, he adopted Divisionism. During Previati’s lifetime, his work was exhibited throughout Europe. He also wrote several books on theory and technique of painting.

Maximilien Luce: A Neo-Impressionist

Maximilien Luce - Notre Dame de Paris - 1900 - Oil on canvas, 116 x 81.3 cm- Christies (click photo for larger image)Maximilien Luce (1858-1941) was a prolific French Neo-impressionist artist, known for his paintings, illustrations, engravings, and graphic art, and also for his anarchist activism. Starting as an engraver, he then concentrated on painting, first as an Impressionist, then as a Pointillist, and finally returning to Impressionism. Luce was among the most productive of the Neo-impressionists, creating over two thousand oil paintings, a comparably large number of watercolors, gouaches, pastels, and drawings, plus over a hundred prints. The Musée d'Orsay assesses Luce as "one of the best representatives of the neo-impressionist movement”.

Theo van Rysselberghe: Belgian Pointillism

Theo van Rysselberghe - Madame Theo van Rysselberghe - Oil on canvas - Height: 65 cm (25.59 in.), Width: 54 cm (21.26 in.) - Private Collection (click photo for larger image)Belgian Pointillist painter Theo van Rysselberghe (1862-1926) was a major figure in turn-of-the century (20th) European art. He was among the leaders of a large rank of artists who adhered to the principle of Neo-Impressionism, which reacted against the empirical realism of French Impressionism. The Neo-Impressionists relied on systematic calculation and scientific theory to achieve predetermined visual effects.

Henri-Edmond Cross: An Influential Neo-Impressionist

Henri-Edmond Cross - La Terrasse Fleurie (The Flowered Terrace) - c. 1905 - Oil on panel - 9 1/8 x 12 1/2 in - Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (click photo for larger image)Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) was a French pointillist painter and printmaker, who contributed a great deal to the Neo-Impressionist movement. The founder of that movement was Georges Seurat, and his goal was to make Impressionism precise in form--and more scientific in approach. Seurat was not the only Neo-Impressionist, however. The work of Henri-Edmond Cross heavily influenced Fauvism, considered to be the first of the Modern movements, and had a strong impact on Henri Matisse.
