Sister Wendy - The Complete Collection (Story of Painting / Grand Tour / Odyssey / Pains of Glass)

“Sister Wendy Beckett has transformed public appreciation of art through her astonishing knowledge, insight and passion for painting and painters.” This set includes Sister Wendy's Story of Painting, Sister Wendy's Odyssey, and Sister Wendy's Grand Tour. Simultaneously delightful and scholarly--this is a must have for anyone interested in art history.

  • Exit Through the Gift Shop
    Exit Through the Gift Shop
When British stencil artist Banksy traveled to Los Angeles to work, he came across obscure French filmmaker Thierry Guetta and his badly organized collection of videotapes involving the activities of graffiti artists. Inspired, Banksy assembled them with new footage to create this talked-about documentary, and the result is a mind-boggling and odd film (so strange as to be thought a hoax by some) about outsider artists and the definition of art itself.
  • The Impressionists
    The Impressionists
A dramatization of the Impressionist movement as seen through the eyes of Claude Monet. Highly entertaining and informative.
  • The Impressionists: The Other French Revolution
The Impressionists: The Other French Revolution
A very personal and revealing look at the personalities that created Impressionism.

June 2nd & 3rd - “Illuminations”

(click photo for larger image)Los Angeles--St. Paul Lutheran Church will be presenting its 1st Annual fundraising art exhibition on Saturday & Sunday - June 2nd and 3rd, 2012. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of artworks will benefit the Church.

This milestone “first” of what will be many Annual events at St. Paul will feature works of art inspired by feelings, thoughts, and ideas related to spirituality--which lead,  of course -- to “Illuminations”. The artists sharing their personal visions include Stan Bruce, Sherry Giang, Jill Kiefer, Toni Scott, and Shelley Bruce.

Because of the varied styles and media pursued by each of these talented artists--this promises to be a fantastic show! During the course of each exhibit day--the artists will deliver impromptu talks about their work. They’ll also be available to chat with visitors during all exhibition hours.

There will be a meditation space where people can just relax and reflect on their own thoughts. A Community Art Project will also be in place--where guests can express their own illuminations.

We hope that you will offer your support to the artists--and to St. Paul Lutheran Church--by visiting the exhibition.

There will be a reception on Saturday at around 12:30 PM and on Sunday at around 1:30 PM. Light refreshments will be served. Join us for this very special event!

Hopper, Dove and Marin: Global Modernists

Edward Hopper - Gas - 1940 - Oil on canvas - 26 1/4 x 40 1/4 inches (66.68 x 102.24 cm) - Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA (click photo for larger image)Edward Hopper created exceptional realistic (or so they seemed) depictions of everyday urban scenes that shock the viewer into recognition of the strangeness of familiar surroundings. John Marin is especially known for his expressionistic, breathtaking seascapes of Maine--as well as his views of Manhattan. Arthur Dove was one of the earliest nonobjective artists—and the primary inspiration for Georgia O’Keeffe (among many others).

John Marin - City Scene - circa 1909 -Private collection - Painting - watercolor 30.48 cm (12 in.) x 22.86 cm (9 in.) (click photo for larger image)I will begin a five-week program on this topic at the Palos Verdes Art Center--on Tuesday afternoons from 12:30-3:30, and beginning Tuesday, May 15th. In this program we’ll examine the amazing works (and lives) of these three significant modern artists. They were Americans by birth, but their art was truly “global” long before that term entered our vocabulary. Space is limited so register now! Starts April 11th - Anything Goes! - Painting in Alternative (and All Other) Media

Jill Kiefer, Wet and Wild, 2011; alternative media on masonite, 24 x 12 in., Collection of the artistI teach a class at the Palos Verdes Art Center called Anything Goes, which focuses on creating abstract works of art using primarily non-artist materials. These include metallic paints and patinas, crackling gels and pastes, texturing agents, carpentry tapes and supplies, tissue and other papers, and a whole other host of industrial materials. This workshop is totally liberating! Students develop a variety of techniques and approaches. Along with fundamental and advanced painting concepts and techniques, students learn important lessons about the relationships between subject matter and materials AND about letting the work process direct the final product. No prior art training is required for these workshops, and students can create a work as large as 60”x60” or work on several smaller projects. I offer this workshop every term at PVAC. Visit their website for more info and to REGISTER NOW.
