Worth Watching
  • Empires - The Medici: Godfathers of the Renaissance
Empires - The Medici: Godfathers of the Renaissance
A fascinating and highly entertaining look at one of the most important families of the Renaissance era--the Medici.
  • Sister Wendy - The Complete Collection (Story of Painting / Grand Tour / Odyssey / Pains of Glass)
Sister Wendy - The Complete Collection (Story of Painting / Grand Tour / Odyssey / Pains of Glass)

“Sister Wendy Beckett has transformed public appreciation of art through her astonishing knowledge, insight and passion for painting and painters.” This set includes Sister Wendy's Story of Painting, Sister Wendy's Odyssey, and Sister Wendy's Grand Tour. Simultaneously delightful and scholarly--this is a must have for anyone interested in art history.

  • Exit Through the Gift Shop
    Exit Through the Gift Shop
When British stencil artist Banksy traveled to Los Angeles to work, he came across obscure French filmmaker Thierry Guetta and his badly organized collection of videotapes involving the activities of graffiti artists. Inspired, Banksy assembled them with new footage to create this talked-about documentary, and the result is a mind-boggling and odd film (so strange as to be thought a hoax by some) about outsider artists and the definition of art itself.
  • The Impressionists
    The Impressionists
A dramatization of the Impressionist movement as seen through the eyes of Claude Monet. Highly entertaining and informative.
  • The Impressionists: The Other French Revolution
The Impressionists: The Other French Revolution
A very personal and revealing look at the personalities that created Impressionism.

Summer Classes at Palos Verdes

I'm very pleased to announce that registration has begun for my summer classes at Palos Verdes Art Center!

This year, I'll be offering five all-new programs in Fine Arts and Art History. A description of the classes and registration information follows after the cut...

MONDAYS

BROWN BAGGERS PAINTING & DESIGN WORKSHOP WITH JILL - ALL MEDIA - Mondays – 10:30 am–3:30 pm– 7 Sessions - July 9 - August 20

In this ALL NEW workshop program--students will work alongside the Instructor, on whatever projects interest them. Jill will be working on design paintings, and will demonstrate how two-dimensional design principles can be applied to painting projects. Emphasis will be placed on elements of line, form, value, color theory, painting principles and visual vocabulary. Particular attention will be paid to developing a disciplined approach toward design and the development of perceptual skills. Students must supply all of their own materials. Bring a bag lunch each week, because we’ll break for an hour at 12:30--to discuss painting while we eat! Please bring a canvas, your supplies, and ideas to the first class. 5 hours

TUESDAYS

DARE TO TRY: A PAINTING WORKSHOP FOR THE COMPLETE NOVICE and CONTINUING STUDENTS!  Tuesday Mornings – 9:00am–12:00 noon– 7 Sessions

July 10 - August 21

This painting workshop is specifically designed for the person who has always wanted to paint—but has been a bit too shy to give it a try! Continuing students are also welcome. Starting with the absolute basics, you’ll learn every aspect of painting, and may work in oils or acrylics. Each class will begin with a structured lesson and demonstration, followed by directed studio work. For interested students, we’ll also be exploring how iPad users can enhance your creative processes using a variety of apps, such as Color Box, Sketch Book, ePaint, Procreate, ArtStudio, Art Authority...and more! Students must bring your own materials. If you own an iPad--bring that along, too. A supply list is available at the office. Absolutely no prior art training is required. Please remember to bring your canvas (any size you want) and supplies to the first class and wear your painting clothes!

MARC and MACKE: PIONEERS OF EXPRESSIONISM - Tuesday Afternoons - 12:30-3:30pm - 7 sessions - July 10 - August 21

Franz Marc and Auguste Macke were good friends--and major trailblazers of Expressionism. Marc--a German artist best known for the intense mysticism of his paintings of animals--was a pioneer in the birth of abstract art. French painter Macke's interests were directed toward gentle figurations of women, children, and the landscape--resulting in painted expressions of feelings and moods, rather than objective realities. Tragically, both of these artists’ lives were cut short by WWI. But their legacies significantly impacted modern art--and live on to the present day. On this fascinating journey--we’ll explore the lives and art of Marc and Macke--along with those artists who significantly influenced their work. We’ll also examine their enduring contributions to the history of art.

WEDNESDAYS

ANYTHING GOES! - PAINTING IN ALTERNATIVE (and ALL OTHER) MEDIA –Wednesday Mornings – 9:00am–12:00 noon– 7 Sessions

July 11 - August 22

This class is totally liberating! In this workshop, you’ll develop a variety of techniques and approaches, using whatever media you choose. Our FOCUS will be on alternative (non-artist) materials —but all media are welcome. No prior art training is required. You may create a work as large as 60”x60” or work on several smaller projects. Along with fundamental and advanced painting concepts and techniques, you’ll learn important lessons about the relationships between subject matter and materials--and about letting the creative process direct the final product. For interested students, we’ll also be exploring how iPad users can enhance your creative processes using a variety of apps, such as Color Box, Sketch Book, ePaint, Procreate, ArtStudio, Art Authority...and more! Students working in traditional media must bring your own supplies. ALL STUDENTS MUST BRING A CANVAS TO THE FIRST CLASS. ALL ALTERNATIVE MEDIA SUPPLIES (except your canvas) WILL BE PROVIDED FOR A FEE OF $25, TO BE PAID AT THE FIRST CLASS.

DARE TO TRY: A MENTOR ARTIST WORKSHOP FOR THE COMPLETE NOVICE and CONTINUING STUDENTS! –12:30-3:30pm - 7 sessions - July 11 - August 22

This painting workshop is specifically designed for those of you interested in learning painting techniques from a master mentor artist. All levels of skill--including novices--are welcome! No prior art training is required. You may either work from a mentor artist of YOUR choice--or select a painting from our featured mentor artists. This term--our focus will be on Franz Marc and Auguste Macke. Trailblazers of Expressionism--these artists were both masters of color and composition, interested in expressing feeling and moods, rather than strict objective realities. Students must bring your own materials--and oils or acrylics are fine. If you own an iPad--bring that along, too. A supply list is available at the office. Please remember to bring your canvas (any size you choose) and supplies to the first class!
