The Arts and Crafts Movement - A Response to Industrialization
The Arts and Crafts Movement was a celebration of individual design and craftsmanship. It developed as a reaction against the transformation of Britain that took place as a result of the industrial revolution. William Morris (1834-1896) who spearheaded the movement, is particularly remembered as a book designer. He also produced stained glass, textiles and wallpaper, in addition to being a painter and writer. Morris and his colleagues influenced the decoration of churches and houses into the early 20th century. As an author, illustrator and medievalist, Morris helped to establish the modern fantasy genre. Indeed, his work had a direct influence on such authors as J.R.R. Tolkien.
