  • Exit Through the Gift Shop
    Exit Through the Gift Shop
When British stencil artist Banksy traveled to Los Angeles to work, he came across obscure French filmmaker Thierry Guetta and his badly organized collection of videotapes involving the activities of graffiti artists. Inspired, Banksy assembled them with new footage to create this talked-about documentary, and the result is a mind-boggling and odd film (so strange as to be thought a hoax by some) about outsider artists and the definition of art itself.
  • The Impressionists

What About Art is Back!

The COVID-19 pandemic and other health issues required What About Art? to take quite a long break. We’ve missed you! But…we’re back now and eager to share info with you all about Jill Kiefer’s Online Art History classes for Winter 2021, offered through the Bethany Arts Community.

Later this week, we’ll give you a rundown of Jill’s classes at the Scarsdale Adult School and LMCCE!

Paul Cézanne: The Father of Modern Art (Online)

Although not widely appreciated until the last decade of his life, Paul Cézanne was the preeminent French artist of the Post-Impressionist era. Insisting that painting stay in touch with its material, virtually sculptural origins, he paved the way for the emergence of twentieth-century modernism, both visually and conceptually.

His work constitutes the most powerful and essential link between the ephemeral aspects of Impressionism and the more materialist, artistic movements of Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism and complete Abstraction. Cézanne’s art also embraces the great art of the past in surprising ways. In this series, we’ll examine the context evolution, achievements and broad influence of this unique individual—as an artist and a man. Pablo Picasso believed Cézanne was “the father hovering over us” and Henri Matisse dubbed him “the father of us all”.

Dr. Jill will be teaching a six-week program on this major artist for the Bethany Arts Community. Take this class to find out why Paul Cézanne remains so highly influential
