  • Exit Through the Gift Shop
    Exit Through the Gift Shop
When British stencil artist Banksy traveled to Los Angeles to work, he came across obscure French filmmaker Thierry Guetta and his badly organized collection of videotapes involving the activities of graffiti artists. Inspired, Banksy assembled them with new footage to create this talked-about documentary, and the result is a mind-boggling and odd film (so strange as to be thought a hoax by some) about outsider artists and the definition of art itself.

 Reincarnation

Did you know that Diego Rivera devoted six months to traveling in Italy, to study murals by such artists as the great 12th century Proto-Renaissance master, Giotto? Can you see the influence in the volume and rounded character of Rivera’s figures?

Did you know that Amedeo Modigliani relied heavily on Italian Mannerism to inform his own painting style? He was weaned on Italian art, and made numerous references to that tradition in his own work

Did you know that the composition of Édouard Manet’s 1866 painting titled Olympia (shocking at the time) was based on Titian’s c. 1534 Venus of Urbino?

Great art never dies—and is never forgotten—even if we don’t consciously remember it. In some cases, artists have told us which paintings, artists, or movements have inspired them. But…not always. However, we can train our own eyes to recognize the past being reimagined in the present, and the discoveries are always enlightening. Join us for Reincarnations: Finding the Past in the Present to discover many more connections like these and to learn techniques for reading the art you love in entirely new ways.
