Did You Know?
The word cartoon originally comes from painting terminology. Cartoon relates to a preliminary, but fully worked, sketch from which the outlines could be transferred to be the basis of a design for a fresco or painting. The cartoon would be tacked up on the painting surface, holes would be tapped into the sketch, and charcoal dust would be blown through a straw-like instrument. Voila! A design was there which the artist could then paint.
