Van Gogh created his most famous work The Starry Night during a 10-month voluntary stay at a psychiatric center in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, France. The painting depicts the view outside of his sanatorium room window at night, although Vincent painted it--from memory--during the day. Vincent claimed that he was always most sane when he was painting. His earliest career aspiration was to be a pastor in the Dutch Reformed Church, like his father, however the church felt his interpretation of the Bible was too “literal”.
