The Mystery of Modi: An Evening with Amedeo Modigliani - Saturday – 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM – May 2
Despite his short life, Italian Expressionist painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani created unique works of art that are among the most important of the twentieth century and beyond. Along with other Modernists living in Paris at the time, Modi struggled against poverty and chronic ill health, dying of tuberculosis and the excesses of drink and drugs at age 35. His legend has since become nearly as large as Vincent van Gogh’s—and for a long time it overshadowed serious critical assessment of his work. Modigliani’s portraits and nudes are characterized by asymmetrical compositions, elongated figures and a simple but monumental use of line, resulting in works of power and mystery. His sculptures are equally as compelling. A unique feature of his work is its embodiment of the Italian tradition that was Modigliani’s heritage. Join us as we separate the facts from the fictions that surround this amazing artist—and survey his life and his art.
(1 session – 3 hours, with a break midway through the program)
