Upcoming Presentation: Jacob Lawrence: Vivid, Stylized Realism
Vibrant, striking colors contrasted with somber brown and black outlines and shadows imbued Lawrence’s work with a distinctive overtone.
This presentation will focus on some of his best-known pieces, such as Life in Harlem (1942) and War (1947)—and, in particular, on his powerful Migration Series. Created when the artist was just 23 years old, this series of 60 small tempera paintings (with text captions) addresses the multi-decade mass movement of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North, which began around 1915.
All of the panels (which are not all owned by a single institution) will be reunited for the first time in 20 years at MoMA, beginning April 3, 2015.
