The Old Guitarist
Every now and again it’s important to revisit our friend, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), the most revolutionary artist of the 20th century. The Old Guitarist is an oil painting by the modern master. The subject matter is an old, blind, careworn man, dressed in tatters and weakly hunched over his guitar. He’s playing his on the streets of Barcelona. This work was part of Picasso’s “Blue Period” during which time his living conditions were poor, and the loss of both a dear friend and his sister were haunting him. Several x-rays, infrared images and examinations by curators have revealed three different figures hidden behind the old guitarist.
