A Double Homage
Félix Bracquemond (1833-1914) was a French painter and printmaker, who was a key figure in the revival of etching as a fine arts form, in France. He produced over eight hundred plates, comprising portraits, landscapes, scenes of contemporary life, and bird-studies, besides numerous interpretations of other artists’ paintings. This particular work is an homage to the great German master, Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543), who created his “Erasmus” in oils. Erasmus is widely regarded as the greatest European scholar of the 16th century. So these works combined are a tribute to him, as well.
