Geological Echo: La Pietà
Surrealist Salvador Dali (1904-1989) added his own Surrealist touch to the perfected architectural perspectives achieved in Renaissance art. He tried his hand at studies of all of Rome's most-lauded landmarks. In Dali’s study of Michelangelo's Pietà (1982), the Virgin's breasts become windows into a serene, blue green seascape. Dalí's version (like Michelangelo’s masterpiece) inspires emotion in the viewer, as if one is seeing paradise through divine love. But of course, let us not forget the amazing work of Michelangelo that inspired this effort. Dali was around 78 when he completed his treatment. Michelangelo was 23 when he was working on his Pietà.
