The Pre-Raphaelites - Where Literature Met Art
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was established in 1848 by artists wanting to develop a naturalistic style of art--and directly challenge the conventions of the Academies. The great Renaissance painter, Raphael, was the artist they considered to have achieved the highest degree of perfection. Students were encouraged to draw from his examples, rather than from nature itself. Thus--the name "Pre-Raphaelites".
Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) was one of the great painters of this style. The group was particularly fond of subjects from the realm of literature. Note that Rossetti’s namesake may well have been the great Italian poet, Dante.
