Freedom from Want or The Thanksgiving Picture is one of Four Freedoms paintings by Norman Rockwell that were inspired by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in his 1941 State of the Union Address, known as the “Four Freedoms” (The other paintings in this series were Freedom of Speech, Freedom from Fear, and Freedom of Worship. Of the four paintings, this is the one most often seen in art books with critical review and commentary. The painting has become a nostalgic symbol of an enduring American theme of holiday celebration and family continuity.
Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) was an American illustrator who possessed an incredible talent for rendering realistic details. His work was loved by the public, but largely dismissed by most critics as lacking artistic merit and authentic social observation. Nevertheless, In 1977 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Pres. Gerald R. Ford.
