Frederick Leighton (1830-1896) and Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) were the leading Classicists, and in their lifetimes were considered by many to be the finest painters of their generation. These movements were closely related to the 18th century Romanticism, as well as to the Pre-Raphaelite painters of the mid 19th century.
