Contemporary French artist Bernard Piffaretti divides his canvases with a vertical line--then paints an abstract image on one half of the canvas and copies it on the other. The original becomes a copy and the copy becomes an original. He’s very consistent in his approach. It’s an interesting idea, and his results are colorful, lively and thought provoking. Our West Coast readers can see this work at Cherry and Marin in Los Angeles, which is presenting an exhibit of Piffaretti’s work. You can also visit his website ( www.bernardpiffaretti.com ) to view some of his work. But you’ll need to brush up on your French if you want to read the text!
