Eugène Boudin: Early en plein air

Eugène Boudin - Beach at Trouville - 1893 - Oil on canvas, 56 x 91 cm - The Hermitage, St. Petersburg (click photo for larger image)In the 1890s, French painter Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) —who had once been a mentor to Claude Monet—came in turn under the influence of Monet and often worked en plein air on the Normandy coast. But, true to tradition, he subordinated color to the molding of form, thus giving his barely delineated groups on the seashore the persuasiveness of scenes from life.
