  • Exit Through the Gift Shop
    Exit Through the Gift Shop
When British stencil artist Banksy traveled to Los Angeles to work, he came across obscure French filmmaker Thierry Guetta and his badly organized collection of videotapes involving the activities of graffiti artists. Inspired, Banksy assembled them with new footage to create this talked-about documentary, and the result is a mind-boggling and odd film (so strange as to be thought a hoax by some) about outsider artists and the definition of art itself.

“As a young child, I was always aware of my environmental surroundings. My father was a forestry engineer and most weekends involved time spent out of doors as a family. We hiked up mountains and meandered through woods, all the while, learning about the trees, plants and wildlife that surround us."

Marcy Horswill - “Head Held Proud” - Fibre Art - 15.25 x 18 in."As I grew up, I spent many hours alone, out of doors, absorbing all of nature’s beauty. When I was eight years old, my parents bought me a horse, which we kept boarded at a nearby farm. Riding horseback through field and forest gave me a new perspective and a longed for independence to explore nature on my own. On horseback, I was disguised as an extension of the horse and got a great sense of what it is like to be part of the forest."

"After growing up and being sensitive to human activity overpowering nature, I had to take a step back and look at nature’s side of the story. Questions arose. Was nature really suffering while the human population took over the environment? Or was it holding its own, adapting its life cycles to those of the humans surrounding it? Instead of watching this interaction with distress and horror, I began to watch it with interest. Now when I walk through the forest and fields on the edges of the city, I look for changes in nature and I watch for plants that are thriving. It is not easy to see positive natural adaption. It is much easier to see garbage littering the earth, chopped down trees, and forests bulldozed over for new house basements to be dug. One really must look a lot closer to see that some of nature is trying very hard to spring back, despite the human factor. And...in some cases nature is triumphant.”
