Franz Marc - Lake with Reflection of Trees, 1912 Watercolor, on paper (click photo for larger image)Strongly influenced by the avant-garde work of the Fauves and the Cubists, German artist Franz Marc (1880-1916) created the idyllic work featured here shortly before he was conscripted in 1914. Marc was one of the most important German Expressionists--and was a founder of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group. Sadly, he was killed in action during WWI.
