  • Exit Through the Gift Shop
    Exit Through the Gift Shop
When British stencil artist Banksy traveled to Los Angeles to work, he came across obscure French filmmaker Thierry Guetta and his badly organized collection of videotapes involving the activities of graffiti artists. Inspired, Banksy assembled them with new footage to create this talked-about documentary, and the result is a mind-boggling and odd film (so strange as to be thought a hoax by some) about outsider artists and the definition of art itself.

Philip Karlberg - Jackie Onassis (click photo for larger image)

There are so many ways of creating fascinating works of art--and it’s exciting to be living in an age when there are no limits as to what materials we can use--and which approaches we take.

“What is it that makes a celebrity recognizable? Artist Philip Karlberg shows us that all it takes is a pointillist representation to invoke the familiarity of a famous face. In his series Pin Art for Plaza Magazine, Karlberg draws the faces of various celebrities using thousands of wooden pins, lit just right to bring into view the faces of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Johnny Depp, Steve McQueen, and others.”

From “My Modern Met” - “The Tragic Other Figure”

Guilio Paolini, L'altra figura (The Other Figure), 1984 (click photo for larger image)

“Here at My Modern Met, we feature many works by contemporary artists, but once in awhile we get stopped in our tracks by a timeless piece that was completed decades ago. This sculpture, titled L'altra figura (The Other Figure) was created by Italian artist Guilio Paolini in 1984. It features two Roman busts raised on plinths, with two mirrored heads looking at the floor as is something dramatic has just taken place. With multiple pieces of plaster shattered onto the floor, it appears that another bust must have taken a great fall to its death.”

Wine Stain Portraits by Amelia Fais Harnas

The Winemaker, No. 3, | 2012 | Damiani Vino Rosso on cotton | 32” x 30” (click photo for larger image)Amelia Fais Harnas began experimenting with wine stains and fabric about a year ago. Her results are exquisite. About her own work she says:

“A portrait artist at heart, I am particularly intrigued by the challenge of trying to control the unpredictable nature of wine bleeding through fabric in order to channel the equally imprecise nature of a person’s character. In addition, the sacred aspect of wine lends itself to religious iconography, reminding many of the Shroud of Turin: one who drinks wine may come to feel a certain level of saintliness sipping on this liquid form of divinity. So, this is a form of consecration.”

The results Harnas achieves are truly amazing--and they do indeed have an iconic, sacred feel to them. She has managed to surround her subjects with a medieval-renaissance aura.  READ MORE...
