  • Exit Through the Gift Shop
    Exit Through the Gift Shop
When British stencil artist Banksy traveled to Los Angeles to work, he came across obscure French filmmaker Thierry Guetta and his badly organized collection of videotapes involving the activities of graffiti artists. Inspired, Banksy assembled them with new footage to create this talked-about documentary, and the result is a mind-boggling and odd film (so strange as to be thought a hoax by some) about outsider artists and the definition of art itself.

Welcome to our discussion board. We hope you’ll participate. Ask a question--any question--about art. Answer a question. Voice your opinion. Whatever you want to say about art can be said here--and whatever you want to know can be asked. Let me start the ball rolling a bit... What IS art? Let’s see how many definitions we can come up with!

Art is something that stimulates an individual's thoughts, emotions, beliefs, or ideas through the senses. Artworks can be explicitly made for this purpose or interpreted on the basis of images or objects.

There are many answers to this, but I especially like Ellen Dissanayake's idea that art is the 'making special' of something. She is an anthropologist, and so sees art as something that is used, culturally, so this 'making special' is always for a purpose. And while there are as many purposes as there are people in the world, and as many moments in a day, by the exaggeration of the key features of the subject being portrayed, and by the understatement of those parts of it we don't want to draw attention to, we set the object of our art making apart from the everyday. We take it magnificently further than needed for a mere depiction, we make it special, make it stand out and apart from the ordinary. Art, in this perspective, is how we express caring about something, and wanting to communicate and share that caring to and with others.

It is one human telling another human what it means to be human.....(perhaps)....

To me great art is something that changes the way I view the world around me or inspires me to question it.

Any who. This is my work. Maybe at some point I get to make some that does as I stated above ;-)
